                          WHOLE NUMBER

We are familiar with counting Numbers ( 1,2,3,4,5,6, ...........) These numbers are also known as Natural Numbers. We can represent them on the number line. we can define whole numbers as a collection of natural numbers and 0. 
 therefore all natural numbers are whole numbers but all Whole numbers are not natural numbers.

                          Important Points


1.  If you add 1 to a natural number, we get its successor. 
2.  If you subtract 1 from a natural number, you get its predecessor.
3. Every natural number has a successor. 
4. Every natural number except 1 has a predecessor. 
5. If we add the number zero to the collection of natural numbers, we get the collection of whole numbers. 
5. Every whole number has a successor. 
6. Every whole number except zero has a predecessor. 
7. All natural numbers are whole numbers. 
8. All whole numbers are not natural numbers. 






   (1) Write the next three natural numbers after 10999.
     Answer: The given number is 10999
                     for the next number, add one to the given number
                     so the next three numbers are
                     10999 + 1 = 11000
                     11000 + 1 = 11001
                     11001 + 1 = 11002

2.        (2)  Write the three whole numbers occurring just before 10001. 

             Answer : The given number is 10001

                             for the previous number, subtract one from the given number

                             so the three whole numbers occurring just before 10001 are

                             10001 - 1 = 10000

                             10000 - 1 = 9999

                             9999 - 1 = 9998

   

3.        (3) Which is the smallest whole number?

            Answer: The smallest Whole number is zero.

4.      (4)How many whole numbers are there between 32 and 53? 

           Answer: There are 20 whole numbers between 32 and 53

                  ( 33, 34, 35, 36, 37, 38, 38, 40, 41, 42, 43, 44, 45, 46, 47, 48, 49, 50, 51, 52)


5.     (5) Write the successor of :

       (a) 2440701

           ( Note: to find a successor, add one to the given number )

          Successor of 2440701 is 2440701 + 1 = 2440702

       (b) 100199

             Successor of 100199 is 100199 + 1 = 100200

       (c) 1099999

             Successor of  1099999 is  1099999 + 1 = 1100000

       (d) 2345670.

             Successor of 2345670 is 2345670 + 1 = 2345671

6.    (6)  Write the predecessor of :

          ( Note: to find a predecessor, subtract one from the given number)

      (a) 94

            The predecessor of 94 is 94 - 1 = 93

      (b) 10000

            The predecessor of 10000 is 10000 - 1 = 9999

      (c) 208090

           The predecessor of 208090 is  208090  - 1 =  208089

      (d) 7654321

            The predecessor of 7654321 is 7654321 - 1 = 7654320


7.     (7) In each of the following pairs of numbers, state which whole number is on the left of the other number on the number line. Also write them with the appropriate sign (>, <)between them.

     ( Note: On the number line smaller  always lie on the left side of the bigger number)

     (a) 530, 503

         Answer: 503 is smaller than 530 so 503 is on the left side of 530

                        530 >  503 

     (b) 370, 307

        Answer: 307 is smaller than 370 so 307 is on the left side of 370

                        370 >  307 

     (c) 98765, 56789

          Answer: 56789 is smaller than 98765 so 56789 is on the left side of 98765

                        98765 >  56789 

     (d) 9830415, 10023001 

           Answer: 9830415 is smaller than 10023001 so 503 is on the left side of 530

                           9830415   <  10023001

          (a) Zero is the smallest natural number.
